Yeah, this whole wave of interest in AI and the fact that it could take over all kinds of knowledge work and put lots of humans out of work that are solidly middle class - accountants, advertising, marketing, lawyers, etc., etc. The uncomfortable elephant in the room - companies (and, sigh, shareholders) would absolutely love the cost savings and higher profits, so if the hype is real, they will absolutely slash the human jobs. But our economic system still has consumerism at its core - ppl paying for goods and services. Besides the "wtf is going to happen to ppl and their families?" is the subject no one is grappling with - wtf is going to be our central economic system, since consumer based capitalism doesn't work so great without a large consumer class with incomes.

But they’re gonna run with the money, break the economy and then get bailout money again. But I agree with you. They say even housekeeping. Appliances are gonna be super programmable.
AI impacting EVERY industry. The dockworkers ended their strike for $ but no decision on automation. In Shanghai, now fully automated, 10% of their staff trained to use the automation and 90% laid off ! I sat in a meeting with a marketing modeling company. They had 50 offshore employees entering data, with AI they have 5. Their acct managers, prior to AI handled 10 national accounts each. Now one acct manager can handle 50+. But when questioned the CEO still hedged that it would cost people their jobs. Needless to say I explained we were all capable of doing the math and were aware they would not keep on 50 people when 5 could do the work AND we doubted they lowered their rates to reflect that. Therefore, they were making a lot more profit. The moderator cut in with some inane comment. Listen, I love AI. But it will have impact on employment. Where is everyone to go? They are raising retirement age so we have more older people job hunting - because ageism is real and we have people entering the workforce. Good luck to us all.
What does this company do that they were able to fully replace over 45 workers with AI already? I know AI can do a lot and all, and it’s certainly helped speed up some of my work, but definitely isn’t at the level that could replace me yet. I’m just shocked at how many jobs they were able to pass off to it already when I’m still babysitting anything coming from AI.

I don’t get it.

The original poster, Nina Turner, is mis-using the word "faze" - it should be "phase"

Of course we *can* do those things. We shouldn’t. But we certainly can. And we have. We’ve introduced automation into a slew of industries over the last century without talking about UBI. Why do we think things are going to be different now?

I don’t think that’s what is going to happen.
