Going through our online community's membership every month is frustrating because a lot of people get upset if their account is put on hold but they never post anything and we discourage lurkers

Just a thought - have you ever run some sort of campaign or incentive to encourage them to participate in the community? And see if maybe that decreases lurkers?

As someone who is active in a lot of communities outside of work, I personally dislike communities that do this. Sometimes I join specifically just to lurk. I may not have much to contribute to the topic, but I am still interested in learning. Or sometimes I just don't have the time for my lower-priority communities. I make no attempt to rejoin communities that remove me for inactivity.
