In the grand scheme of your career these 4 months will not have that much of an impact. In the grand scheme of your life, looking back on the time spent with your baby will be more valuable than you can imagine at this point in time.
Assuming you’re a good performer already, the leadership team won’t forget you. Especially if you come back in January and kick ass.
And congratulations on being a parent (assuming a new one)!
Focus on your kid, this is time you’re never getting back and you have plenty of time to make yourself known by doing good work when you get back. I’m amazed that you can take 4 months, would have loved to do that
Agree, disconnect. I made the mistake of telling my teams that I would be checking email. People were calling and emailing me the first week I was gone. I learned very very quickly that being home with a kid is harder than a full time job and by the second week I just said I’m done answering emails and phone calls.
Everyone survived, the projects kept going, no one forgot about me, there was plenty of work upon my return, and practice leadership is still telling me that I’m a top performer.
The one thing I struggle to do now is that I have to very aggressively prioritize my schedule because working late to keep up just isn’t an option all the time
EYOP - Disconnect is my recommendation
I disconnected for three months. Least of your worries. Fatherhood is a blessing. Mazel
Not sure if I’ve been promoted yet since it hasn’t been communicated but if I wasn’t how do I try to stay on track with promotion with only a have years worth of work (since I’m going back to work in January) and if I was then awesome. Any tips, tricks, thoughts, or prior experiences?
Yep. First time parent. It’s been exciting and thanks. I just wasn’t sure if people have came back from paternity leave and gotten promoted on only 6 months worth of work but you brought up good points. Should I try to stay in contact or just turn off and disconnect?
I posted the same question months ago and received the same response. So I'm taking my full leave starting today. That said, there is a proposal in helping out with. And it wouldn't hurt to try to stay in the loop on what projects are coming up. I'd say each out and setup a few coffee chats. Especially as time for you to roll back in January approaches. Beyond that, enjoy the time off. I know I will.
