Job 1: 85k at small boutique firm (3 attorneys). Standard benefits but no 401k. Semi-annual raises. No billable hour requirement and regular 40 hour week. Being groomed to be a partner on a 2-3 year track.

Job 2: 135k at large regional firm (200 attorneys) good benefits. 1900 billable hours requirement. Partner track is 6-8 years but not guaranteed.

Both located in a MCOL area

I keep on posting for long but no calls at all and auto email response for no selection! Anyone having the same problem? Is it very normal especially with big4s?

Through a lot of comp discussions I heard a lot of talk of “making you whole” when things get better. Am I drinking the kool-aid by believing this? Is this just meant to prevent further questions that the firm does not know the answer to?

I’m well liked around the office, I put in the hours and work hard, I haven’t had any dumpster fire projects, but I am a mediocre performer compared to my peers (not as strong project management, communication, not as confident). I just got told they’re firing me. Should I expect severance? Have other people been fired for similar? What did you do with your career?

Is it ok to quit without a job lined up? Is that a red flag for future potential employers?

List the college you went to. When you graduated. How much you pay monthly on student loans and when you think you will be done.

Now that we have work all year long and lack of an off season, isn’t it a good argument to work just 40 hours a week all year long? Of course there will be some 45s, but I feel it can all be managed if leaders are willing to turn away work and still make a good living. I just don’t see the tax profession improving at its current state, am I just being pessimistic? I’m a fairly new manager and there is a high expectation to contribute ideas on how to improve our ways of working, flag up bottlenecks, contribute to strategy etc. We usually have meetings where we discuss these things as a team ( manager and above), but I hardly ever have anything to say. Is there anything I can do to come up with ideas and make more impact in these meetings? Could there be something I’m not paying attention to? Any advice will be appreciated.
