Our Philadelphia-area boutique firm whose practice works exclusively with nonprofits and charities is hiring due to growth. Tax is the basis of Exempt Org work. That is why I am posting here. Great practice working to further charitable missions of our clients. Good WLB (1300 hour billable requirement). Opportunity for the right person to work remotely. For transactional, in-house opportunities are fewer but job security is real - many firms will keep tax counsels, plus there is always the opportunity to lateral or go to an accounting firm. Going to the government is also an option and can be great for your career.
One suggestion is to develop good relationships with corporate associates, as they will feed you work as you get more senior, and you develop a pulse on the work flow.
Clerkship or LLM is not necessary for my firm if you can get a job without it, but can be useful if not. Once you’re at a firm, very firm dependent on whether a part-time LLM is useful/desirable.
This was very helpful, thanks so much!
The first thing you need to understand about tax is that it is a service practice, which is pretty annoying if you want to develop your own clients. It’s also highly niche, so after a few years it can be very difficult to transition to a non tax role. All of that aside, it is highly challenging and if you like problem solving, frankly it’s fun. Job prospects are big 4 accounting or biglaw. There are pros and cons to each but go to a lawfirm over a big 4 accounting shop first to get better legal training. Once you get some experience there are in house opportunities for compliance etc. As far as the LLM goes. I hold a LLM, and you definitely do not need it to practice tax if you are smart and show an interest. It does look better on a resume. If you get an LLM get it from nyu or Georgetown or don’t get it
I have not seen a posting in the Bay Area that requires it.
