Depends on your local laws. In general service animals are legally protected but emotional support animals aren't.
You would have to go through a reasonable accommodation process. For ESA they can request a lot more information without getting into the details of your disability. Mostly due to people who abuse this for either circumventing pet rules/fees or for exotic animals

.Legally they cannot deny you for that. It violates the fair housing act and Americans with disabilities act. Any licensed therapist can write those letters, and it is preferred that a licensed therapist write it over, say a primary care doctor. However, some HOAs try to be slick and will say that they're denying you for another reason. If you have the time and the money you could file a claim in court, because it is absolutely illegal for them to deny you. Based on that. That. ESAs also overide breed and weight restrictions as well as no pet rules within any complex. Some of the a-hole tenons in my mom's complex. Call animal control on and try to give her a hard time to make her get rid of the dog because it is a no pet complex... However, I keep telling her that there is nothing they can do if she has the letter, and typically they must be renewed yearly. My mom's complex even tried to imposed that the only person who can walk the dog is the person who the letter is assigned to, which again is b*******. Read up on it and don't let anyone take advantage of you. No the laws surrounding emotional support animals, throw some legal jargon at them and they'll get scared
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I ended up doing a lot more research and threw the law in their face. All they asked was for my therapist to fill out a short form and then they approved me. I think you’re right that they were just trying to be slick. I think they just didn’t like the fact that she was a restricted breed. But she’s the sweetest dog ever, honestly. They just wanted to make it hard for no reason lol.
