You can also do an initial consultation w a fertility clinic without a referral from your obgyn. I’m an advocate for being proactive bc I feel like we wasted our time ttc naturally after finding out we have <3% chance at the clinic (32 yo F, 33 yo M).
I have endo and knew it could impact our chances. I went to 3 other obgyn before I found one who agreed it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go to a fertility clinic after ttc 5 months (I thought I needed a referral). Everyone else said I should wait at least a year.
What ppl don’t talk about is the 35 yo threshold for women is not an on/off switch. Your egg quality and chances of success with assisted fertility can change significantly YOY after 30.
I’d say if your obgyn won’t support your proactivity go find one who does or go to a fertility clinic yourself.
It’s a struggle for sure. We did a laparoscopy for diagnosis + treatment but it came back 6 months later 😭 currently doing ivf w 2 pgt normal embryos but I’m so worried about not having a successful transfer bc of endo

12 months TTC if you are under 35. Over 35 it’s just 6 months before they suggest you get tested. My OB/gyn ordered the basic fertility work up for me. It was just blood tests on cycle day 2 and 23, sperm analysis for my husband, and an HSG (dye in Fallopian tubes) X-ray between day 8–10. If there’s anything that looks off they will hand you off to a fertility specialist from there.

I questioned it at my OB/GGyn annual which was right at the 6 month mark, but I waited until 10 months (I was 36). And that was almost 2 years ago. It’s a long process of “hurry up and wait”.
You don’t need a fertility work up, but you could get your annual checkup and ask for preconception check. Fertility would look at follicle count, tubes open, AMH, etc. Preconception might check CBC, thyroid, and general physical checks.

Agree… the OB can order you preliminary tests, it’s not a full blown “fertility work up”. I didn’t mean to mislead!
I was diagnosed with what I call “low chance of natural conception” after the basic blood work and low sperm count numbers. We didn’t test beyond that. And also agree with others, you can get these tests on your own if OB isn’t helpful. Mine kept pushing for a few more months naturally, and once she got the blood work back she handed me off like a hot potato. It’s not really their field of work. Not mine at least!
Don’t wait. 33 year old female here dealing with secondary infertility. After six months of trying my OBGYN did a full blood work that revealed low AMH which diagnosed me with low ovarian reserve. It’s better to know early if you have any issues. RE specialist said if you don’t conceive within theee months of trying the likelihood you’ll conceive naturally is 15 percent or so. I feel like people don’t really know this.
Yes I would. Especially if you have any known conditions like pCOS or anything like that. Tell them you’ve been trying for a few months and just want to make sure everything is okay.
1) How long were you off the pill before starting to try? It can stay in your system for months after.
2) 12 months is the general rule for TTC before seeing a specialist. But, many of the top clinics take months to even get you in. Check in with a clinic around 9 months of trying and see when they’re available so that you can get an appointment right around 12 months instead of being stuck waiting 14/15
It may linger a couple of months more, but if you’re seriously trying and timing everything else, then I’d still do a fertility appt 12 months from now. Some of these clinics have such long lead times for appointments so the best thing you can do now is find the clinic you want and check out their lead times. I went through the same thing at 31 and glad we got in the door early, bc even pushing for first available for each appointment for IUIs then IVF, still took a year and a half between initial appointment and IVF embryo transfer (with 4 IUIs and then egg harvest in between).
Thanks all. This is very helpful!
In the same boat as KPMG1 so definitely get blood work done earlh
