So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?
Hi Guys,

Please evaluate this initial offer for Apple ICT3. I think I was low balled, but I want to take more opinions. Currently Sr. MTS at VMware, received Apple ICT3. I was expecting to get to ICT4 but seems like team thinks upper end of ICT3 is more apt. Also, I think it is because I don’t have any counter offers yet.

Whatever you do, PLEASE don't make it about people's age! This is a surefire way to get the company sued for age discrimination and you never working as a manager again.
For sure that's good advice. I don't want them to get a pay decrease. I want myself to get an increase
Slack is awesome.
Older folks knew how to be able to work before slack came about. So it's not that they can't learn but there's tons of ways to work.
Younger folks tend to think that because you can basically text someone that it means it is urgent to respond and forget about basic things like planning.
Does it need to be a direct message? Unless it is sensitive or private, NO. Just stop, it's not productive to have information in silos. We're going to have to repeat.
Does it need 50+ messages in a thread? 100+ messages in a thread? Would a zoom call with all the non verbal be better? What about the poor soul jumping in on the conversation? Who's going to summarize for them?
Can it be in a well crafted email?
Have you ever had to follow threads linking to threads in other channels linking to older threads, etc? It's totally possible to Rick roll someone.
To answer the question:
Training is good if you balance with how NOT to use slack and when to use something else.
No argument against the need for adaptability! I agree wholeheartedly with that.
But there are lots of ways to be adaptable, and as others have mentioned communications channels are just one small way to adapt. Pretty sure the more senior folks in your organization have adapted their way through a great many changes in technology and are where they are now as a result.
I do not think it is due to lack of knowledge/training, but the perception that one has to jump through hoops, dump what you are doing and quickly respond to what is something that is neither sync or async communication wise. The old timers are more likely to keep doing what they are doing. Over the years they learned a thing or two on how to get work done. Perhaps an open discussion on dealing with chat vs email, when to use each, expectations around response times, etc.
Thay may or may not be the issue. But I suggest that you first find out what the issue is rather than write it off to people being 'old'.
Any time you are introducing people of any age to a new tool they haven't used before, a tutorial is valuable!
I believe tutorials like this should be part of the onboarding of the tool and new team mates. Because each team will likely have their own business rhythms and ways of using their tools, even within the same company or division. The training should come from a place of respect - you respect your team and the individuals within and want to help them successfully communicate, so you choose to take a little time to establish proper usage expectations. It shouldn't have anything to do with the age of your team members.
Plus, you don't wanna alienate older folks
I’m a believer in training, for any software or tool, no matter how intuitive it seems. I guarantee if you run this training, folks of all ages will have something to learn. For instance, does everyone know how to set a reminder, how to use shortkeys, how to send messages on a delay? Slack has a ton of features that you might not find unless you’re looking, and like others have said above, the training can be as much about courtesy and best practices as much as it is about functionality.
I have and it was really succesful. Our productivity and efficiency went through the roof
I recommend a training. It really is a useful tool once people become comfortable and familiar with using it.
Again, I would refrain from using age in this scenario or really any other, in the workplace. As a leader, I would expect that to be part of YOUR training.
There's a learning curve to slack. I can see how it can become overwhelming for some individuals. Takes a little bit of time to adjust to it.
I was a part of one and I must say it was pretty beneficial.
Slack is so user friendly, if they don’t participate in threads it’s because they don’t want to not because they don’t know how
Just create a custom thread police react. Tell everyone to use it. Some will use it aggressively. And apply it to anyone who doesn't reply in-thread.
