Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?
Hello Fishes, please let me know how are projects in BCMA department under ICG group in city bank. Hours are a lot more flexible, you’re only working on white collar crime investigations, and you get a lot of unique experience working with law enforcement like the detectives and attorneys. Pay is most likely a lot lower depending on the municipality you work. There’s definitely pros and cons to it
Which city are you looking at?
Depending on the particular DA’s office, the positions you seek could be civil service. You should do some research to confirm and then monitor the exams. Civil service gives preference to current employees so those positions might be promotional to auditors or accountants already employed rather than open competitive (coming off the street so to speak).
Basically, what I am trying to say is that if you actually want that position, it takes a lot of effort and a bit of luck. Definitely reach out to people within the DA’s office if you know anyone.
The perks and work life balance would be unmatched anywhere else except maybe the FBI but there is small risk of relocation with the feds (they could also use it as a way to get you to leave if they don’t like you) that would not exist with a local/state jurisdiction position. The salary is definitely going to be less compared to private positions but there is usually also a pension and fantastic health insurance.
You would be in meetings with attorneys and detectives regarding suspects of white collar crimes. It is pretty cool and as interesting as it gets for an accountant/auditor.
Lots to think about but once the decision is made go for it!
If you're looking at DA's office, you need to do some research on what their forte is in prosecutions and such. I've done a lot of work for various IG offices that ended up in DANY (Manhattan DA), most of it construction fraud related. They had a great construction task force, so the FA's at DANY did a lot of construction fraud work. I'd imagine a good amount of work with Houston DA would be related to the ports, labor crimes and cartels.
