As long as your design is on point, there shouldn't be much to the switch. Though logo exploration, brand books with color swatches or any custom lettering / illustration / fonts would definetly go a long way.
Speaking as a writer who just left a design heavy shop for PR.
Thank you! That’s super helpful
Also come from branding. If you’ve got design chops, you will of course be a potential candidate. The biggest learning curve will probably be the way of working at the shop. Most have a very specific approach to their process of brand development.
I disagree with SCW1, coming from a branding agency background, I know they generally don’t like to consider candidates from PR or advertising. Branding is very different than designing marketing materials or ad campaigns. Completely different skill set and thinking. To make the switch, I think the best pay is to take an internship or apply for a more junior level position (assuming you’re a mid level). Maybe take a branding course to build up your branding portfolio.
Yep my favorite thing to do has always been branding— I usually get put onto any client project that involves a new logo, etc. and I do a lot of freelance logo design. It’s definitely one of my strongest points, I just don’t quite know how to “prove” that my design process/thinking doesn’t revolve around PR, especially when most of my experience has been PR
As a designer myself and many colleagues have switched easily between branding and advertising. PR may be a bit more difficult but if your design skill is there it’s there.
