I have. I started my career as a PM in 2 development agencies. 1 year in each and found them burning me out. Not to mention you’re on the wrong side of the coin.
You want to be on the money side. The client who funds the projects.
It’s completely different from a workload perspective & they are the ones who set expectations of vendors.
I went from my second development agency over to a bank with the same title. I called out alot of the transferrable PM experience to the banking role.
I left out the more “agile” and rapid delivery stuff and talked to more about the waterfall process oriented project delivery model.
Additionally I started taking certification courses targeting ITIL, PMP, Six-Sigma & CSM that helped strengthen my positioning.
The way I found it was through connecting with hundreds of recruiters and contacting them across the city.
The moment I managed my outreach in a spreadsheet that’s when I had a few offers from a few companies to choose from.
Hope that helps
I tend to be skeptical of a PM with too much consulting experience. It’s a different kind of gig. Consultants need to be good at the administrative stuff. Status reports, billable hours, etc are priority. And a lot of times, I don’t trust the consultant PMs to tell the real story. If I’m hiring a PM to work for me, I want candidates who can prove they just get things done. Not saying I don’t want accurate status reports and project accounting, but I don’t want someone that jukes the stats; it’s the communication and real execution that matter. If you’ve got all consulting experience, you may have to prove to the hiring manager that you’re no BS
This feels very bias.
