This happened to me about 3 year ago, eventually after 2-3 weeks I was let go with severance. Probably one of the best things to happen to me, because I was so depressed and ended up at much better place.
Yes. I had received positive feedback every year prior (twice a year) and they chalked it up to me being "in training" for a new dept. That was BS. This man came for my head. I spoke with upper management who pretty much sided with him, ignored my request for a sit down, and said he claimed I was "improving". It was then when I knew it was time to leave. Transferred to a new location (same company) for a year and now I'm at a new company and so much happier.
How long have you been with the company and is this your first performance review? If not, what was his feedback previously? If there’s a huge contrast to what you’ve been told before or whatever feedback he gives you during 1:1s, he sure is trying to get you to exit. Might put you on a PIP. Don’t lose hope! Just continue to do your best and if they still aren’t satisfied, then that’s your clue to move on.
This happened to me a while back. It really sucked.
