Has anyone started in tax and then switched to audit later down the road? Did you have to completely start over as an intern? What pushed you to switch over and what is your experience now in audit?

I know someone who has done this. You can move over at the same level or they may want you to move down a level. Also, tax typically pays more than assurance so they may want to reduce your pay or make your future pay increases smaller to align with their practice.

like

Aw that's unfortunate! Thank you for the insight!

I always think to switch to other way ( coz down the line, I can do my own little practice).
What is making you think to switch to audit ?

You don't need to start over. Just transfer at same level

If there's an audit side in your current firm ask to move over there. If there's an opening ask for it. I did that, the firm I worked at agreed and I was even offered more money. Seems like I wasn't getting paid a lot on Tax at the time and Audit side was better paid. Ask for Associate at the very least. If they think you are a good worker they will help you. They don't want to lose you.

Left my role as a Tax Associate at KPMG within four months hoping that I would find a place somewhere in Audit. Kpmg wouldnt allow me to switch since I was fairly new. Two years later I'm still unemployed lol smh....make sure you have a year under your belt before making the transition. To answer your question, I had coworkers tell me about people who had switched and were happier because it aligned with their long term goals...not getting pigeon holed into Tax work rest of your life.

I keep reading that JDs are valued in compliance but am wondering if a different graduate program is better for my goals. I already plan to obtain the CAMS certification. Thank you!

Received an offer as Engagement Director from Salesforce (CSG, pre sales, L9). Great benefits package, 40% increase in total comp and better WLB.

I do love the people in my practice and current client, but career trajectory has stalled after taking parental leave earlier this year and (yet another) change in leadership.

Realistically, making to Director is 2-3 years away and will require sacrificing time with my family that I am not prepared to give up.

Should I stay or should I go?

Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?

Dumb questions but genuinely curious:

1) Let’s say you’re a recent undergrad candidate with no internships on your resume. What’s the deciding factor that you’re qualified for Advisory vs Tax vs Audit? Is it school, gpa, etc.?

2) Why can’t you switch from Tax to another SL without having to pull strings? I understand that there’s a difference in tax vs book experience but why does the Accounting field gatekeep other SLs? It’s not like we’re incapable of learning other areas.
