Have a lateral offer from a group that I like but which expects more hours than I can fathom working. Is there a point of trying to negotiate a cap on my hours or do I just turn down the offer?

Are you just trying to stick around a couple years and then go in house or something? If not, trying to negotiate an hours cap your peers don’t have is not going to look good and it’s not going to be respected even if they agree to it.

like

Could see if they have a “reduced hours” track, but it’s probably not going to go well before you’ve been there at least a year.

How many hours are unfathomable

like

First of all, you probably will not be billing 2800. That’s absurd so just accept the offer and say no to more work if you’re billing 200-230 hours a month

like

I would just turn down the offer. I’ve never heard of an hours cap for a full time attorney, and even the request I would think would cause the firm to reconsider the offer.

like

A2, similar to everyone else’s advice, I would not ask for an hours cap. I would either stay in your current group, lateral to the new practice group and try to set boundaries thereafter (with the option to leave if they push you out and join a different firm in this new practice group you seem to be interested in), or start looking to lateral to a different firm now.

I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

Former big law associate here who burned out. Now a corporate inhouse counsel.

Been recovering and considering going back to actual legal practice.

One that impacts people’s lives and is meaningful, but where you don’t have to deal with disturbing facts and personal tragedies.

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
