Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Your firm presents opportunities for “X,” whereas I won’t be presented with those same opportunities at my current firm.
I wouldn’t say money. Just say “I wanted to take on more responsibility, wanted different experience” etc
Come up with some rationale that sounds better, like you are interested in the client base, want a “better platform,” etc.
In addition, can you’ll recommended me some good reason that I can state for making the switch? Thanks a bunch!!
Agree with all the above (and we all know it’s for the money, not like we are out here solving world peace).

What are the differences between your current firm and the new firm? (Size, type of client, type of work, how your group is structured, etc.) and then focus on that by highlighting what you currently don’t have at your firm, and why what the new firm offers appeals to you

I would never mention this. If their firm pays more than your current firm, they know and assume that’s part of your reason for wanting to move. But just act like you have no greater passion in life than whatever practice you’re interviewing for, and you think their firm is particularly good at it so that’s where you’ll get to work on the biggest baddest deals for the biggest baddest clients and learn from the biggest baddest experts etc. Other than your substantive experience related to their practice gained at current firm, they’re really not interested in hearing about your current firm experience and culture and flaws and usually won’t ask much about it and you don’t need to bring it up.
You lose negotiating power if they know they pay more (unless it’s an obvious switch from small to big law). Don’t lose that card.
