Express an understanding that lawyers detest billing, but that you love numbers. You should see your goal as understanding the partner-biller’s practices and see how you can complement THEM. You want to be the go-between to satisfy the partner-billers at the front end, and to comply with the accounting department’s guidelines at the back end.
My experience with billing people over the years is that they were rigid slaves to the system rules, which only caused friction with the partners they served. Tell the partners for whom you work that you want to understand how to make the job easier for them, and then fit their billing practices within the firm’s requirements.
Communicate (both in the interview and if you get the job) that you see compliance as YOUR responsibility, not the partner-biller’s, and that you’re not seeking to make them do things differently just to make your job easier.
You’ll make a lot of friends.
Thank you so much for these advices
That’s awesome you’ve got the interview! For salary, definitely do some research on what the going rate is for specialist billing roles in big law firms in your area (it's different depending on location). When negotiating, just be confident in what you bring to the table! Share how your experience at the smaller firm has prepared you for the role, like how you’ve taken on more responsibility or streamlined processes. You got this!
Thank you so much for your advice. I truly appreciate it
