It’s just framing because they were laid off (my guess).
We don’t always have a choice…
Generally speaking, when selling products and services (and most certainly yourself), you have to assume a position of confidence, purpose, and optimism. With friends and family, you can be open and direct about how upset and scared you might be, but on LinkedIn and in other professional environments there is no benefit in seeking sympathy - instead, you gotta express excitement for your new adventure as part of winning business and support from strangers and colleagues.
I realize there’s a whole world of thought along the lines of “bring your whole self” and those folks would likely disagree with me. And all I would say is that there is a time and place for that, and rarely is it in sales conversations.
Because if you’re coming from a good agency it’s not that hard to freelance.
Not at all trying to throw shade! There’s bias in our industry and it’s important to talk about. I have no doubt about your abilities or illusions about the state of our market.
Is it really bad full-time people? It is really unnerving out here.
Along with the aforementioned "laid off pitched as deciding to do it", a couple things I've noticed.
You get so fed up with agency politics and BS that freelancing seems like it HAS to better. It can't be worse, can it?
(Maybe just my immediate network,.but) It feels like we're at the start of a new cycle of creative leadership. Older leaders who've been around and are good are taking a step back or leaving or whatever, and new, underprepared and unskilled creatives are taking their place. They don't know how to be an ECD or CCO yet,.and it drives their people to freelance.
I’ve had several friends go freelance in the last 3-4 months and they’re all killing it making it look easy. Makes me want to join them
Cool. I get it. I suck.
