The videos on Tableau’s site are where my team usually starts - better than any 3rd party videos I’ve found
Any course in Udemy. Tbh, Tableau is very easy to learn. Just a matter of dragging and dropping.
I would recommend taking the Tableau data specialist certification exam. It covers all the basics and credentials never expire after you pass. Also, for the preparation, I did a good Udemy course and passed on my first attempt but any course that covers exam syllabus is good. Here is the link for the one I did https://www.udemy.com/course/tableau-desktop-specialist/
Download a trial and play with super store data set. At a high level, just know that all great dashboards are made in layers using different sheets and tied together using common filters (which you can apply to specific sheets or datasets)
There’s plenty of things like calculations, parameters, LOD etc you could get deep in the weeds on but I laid out a few topics below worth getting acquainted with as a beginner. All of which you can probably find step by step instructions on google.
Pro tips:
Use BANs (big ass numbers) as callouts at the top of dashboards
Learn how to make donut charts in place of pie charts (never use a pie chart)
Learn how to make top 5/bottom 5 lollipop chart
Get acquainted with grouping (super easy)
If applicable, learn how to use the map feature using latitude and longitude and relevant country/city data. Tie together with icons as needed.
While doing some of the above you should be able to get acquainted with stacking marks cards/dual axis
Learn how to make a custom color palette using preferences/notepad
Learn how to save custom icons into your repository
Learn how to use the analytics tab to add banding and reference lines ( can be used to show total values/% on top of bar charts etc)
This is a great list, thanks!
hi TA, it's a pretty hands-on tool, I'd recommend just playing with it and watching YouTube videos to understand what function does what
