Hard skills
R or Python (usually Python) for programming to create visuals. Some analysts are tasked with doing machine learning, but that really comes down to the job description
For more business intelligence, building dashboards. Being able to take a dataset and build a dashboard that summarizes high level KPI metrics. Users are going to want to filter through data so it’s always nice and helpful that it’s interactive. Tableau and PowerBI are considered the top 2 for this
Databases, this one is golden, SQL. How good are you at being able to pull massive amounts of data from a database and make it accessible for analysis. If there was any skill that would universal, it would be SQL
Soft skills
Storytelling - In analytics, you’ll create key insight points from your dataset. You’re going to need to communicate those insights in the context of the business (i.e. making money, saving money, saving time etc). This goes hand in hand with data visualization because building vizzes that call out key differences is important
Communication - How can you translate technical jargon to non-technical stakeholders? 99% of the time, your stakeholder is someone who might not understand data, so in relation to storytelling, you need to be able to find the balance between explaining the purpose of the technology and it’s use case
Hi thanks for your answer!
To sum up, SQL + Tableau/Power BI, understanding of data architecture and business acumen. Nice to have => R and Python right?
I don’t have an engineering background, do you think it may cause an issue?
If you can get certified in Power BI and Tableau, that’s a good place to start
Hey! do you think these data viz tools are enough to get a first job?
For a junior position I'd say a lot less is required that stated by others.
Depending on specific offer I'd start with either Excel or SQL and try to master one of them. If You manage to write your own scripts in VBA, Python or R, then You are already ahead of the curve as a lot of mid level analysts can't automate theirs processes. From my experience spending some hours on object programming course can go a long way, as thanks to this your perspective on problem solving will shift dramatically for the better.
