Put advertising on the back burner and take any job you find - it’s a tight market overall, and pretty horrible right now in advertising. To keep your skills and passion pumped, find a nonprofit where you can volunteer your advertising skills - they’ll appreciate it, and you gain valuable experience until the market improves.
I was laid off at the end of Covid and started feeling desperate in my contacts too.
Finding work is basically a full time job - so go do your full time job remotely if you can. Find a cheap hostel with a coworking space. You may not get a chance to travel like this again. Or visit family, try out a new city, whatever.
The second I landed on a cheap beach and started applying for work for 3-4 hours at lunch between swimming, hiking, playing with my camera, and meeting new people, the desperation went away and good things started happening.
Rising Star
Sucks for everyone right now. Just keep being diligent.
The job market is tough right now, even for those with experience. It's not you, it's the system. To streamline your job search, consider using free online tools. I've used Jobsolv (the app, not their premium service). They have a job board, resume builder, and even an auto-apply feature.
btw I'm from TX and I'm not sure if their app works outside US
Try to get a referral from a current employee wherever you want to apply before you apply.
Where are you based?
I'm based in Dallas but I've been applying for jobs all over.
It seems to be a tough market right now. I have been looking since last November. I was officially laid off in January when our whole division, consisting of around 90 people, was let go. As of two weeks ago, no one in my department (around 20 people) has found a position in the creative field. Everyone has 20 plus years of exp.
I have some advice.
First, never give up.
Consider Thomas Edison’s quote:
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
ie. Do not despair. You are getting closer.
Second, seek outside advice as much as possible. You can’t see yourself. You need others to help you see your blindspots. Accept their constructive criticism, adapt and overcome.
Use an AI transcription service, upload the transcript to ChatGPT/Claude 3.5 Sonnet and tell them your situation and ask for actionable recommendations.
Implement, rinse and repeat.
I’m telling you, the job of your dreams is waiting for you. You just need to continue what you’re doing. Put forth the effort worthy of your next journey.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!
I graduated in May 2023 and I’ve been looking ever since. Had a couple different internships in the meantime that didn’t hire full time after. I’m losing hope in this industry, and I’m not sure what other industries to look into either. Currently interviewing for Marketing Coordinator positions. Lmk if you find any answers. I’m in NYC
