Hi all, currently in my last year of my JD/MBA program in a MCOL city. I’m awaiting an offer for a big 4’s M&A Tax practice as an Associate. I have a little over 2 years of part-time experience in tax at an accounting firm. What should I be expecting for comp? Thanks!

I'd guess in the 95k-115k range.

Will do. Thanks!

70k-75k for regular tax.

80-90k for M&A tax

likefunny

I came in at 72k in MCOL "regular tax" in 2016 with only a JD and no experience. And was offered roughly 130k for HCOL M&A tax out of my LLM in 2019.

This is to say, your figures are hopefully, for OPs sake, low.

With the two years tax experience prior are they bringing you in as a senior or associate? That’s definitely going to have an impact on comp.

The two years of experience was part time (20 hours a week during the school year, full time during the summer), so associate as of now. That’s probably an additional discussion I need to have with them.

I like my current job, company and public accounting. I know I am being underpaid at $70k as a senior tax associate with 2-3 years of experience as I have talked with my local peers as well as local recruiters. Also, I know outside hires to my company get paid about $5-$10k higher than me, but they don’t get a raise the following year. My question is what is everyone’s experience with company hopping to get a pay bump within public accounting?

That 50/50 company then owns 70% of holding company they own all the real estate as a partnership that the original partners are 35/35 and the investors own the remainder. All the real estate deals are then owned by this holding company.
