Don’t stay in Hollywood.
Stay in studio city or Koreatown.
The best hotels are in weho/hollywood, unless you want super luxury like four seasons or the peninsula in Beverly Hills.
Hollywood isn’t what it once was after Co-VID. I used to live in that area and it wasn’t bad but it has been 10 years and I had friends that moved near me from Hollywood citing that it really went down hill. Though it depends where you are if you stay close to the Hollywood and Highland it’s a high traffic area so slightly better but because high traffic it means more beggars. WeHo is a great area and has a Breakfast Republic which is sooo good.
Try Century Park Hotel or the Courtyard Century City/Beverly Hills. That puts you in walking distance to the Century City Mall. There’s also Beverly Terrace. All are less touristy areas but centrally located to where you want to go. And yes rent a car.
You will pay to park everywhere in the city. But there are parking structures everywhere.
Universal Studios, obviously has its own parking lot. Beverly Hills, I usually park on Bedford, it’s caddy corner from Crustacean, but there are parking structures on other streets too, you get 2hrs free, lots of one way streets in the Rodeo area and diagonal cross walks so be careful. Santa Monica, if you’re going to the pier, I think you can still park down the hill somewhere, I never have I use one of the structures located adjacent to the mall on Colorado and 2nd or Parking Structure 4 or 6 depending where I’m going. Water Grill has a great atmosphere and views of the Ocean. Elephante, is rooftop and is also supposed to be good and have views of the ocean but I haven’t been, I recommend reservations for both. Forma is a great Italian place in SM too. Just put “parking” in your maps and stuff will come up.

Airbnb + rent a car
Renting a car will be cheaper than uber no matter where you stay.
I would suggest a hotel unless you have a bigger group of people or unless you are trying this out as a place to potentially live in which case an airbnb would be good. same thing with transportation, honestly if you're just visiting i'd just uber since parking adds up anyways, if you're interested in moving here try renting a car to get a feel for driving here. definitely don't stay in hollywood - santa monica if you want west side or silverlake/los feliz if you want east would be way nicer
Westwood (as defined by the area between the 405 on the West, Santa Monica Blvd on the South, Beverly Glen Blvd on the East and Sunset Blvd on the North is a great place to stay!
Great access to Valley, and Downtown as well as Santa Monica and the coast.
Within the roughly squared area, you are pretty safe to walk and bike around conveniently as long as you stay off the major thoroughfares (though even those aren’t bad) with proximity to everything you’d want to do on the Westside.
There are also great bus connections (Big Blue Bus and even some city operated Metro bus line totally worth considering as an alternative to Ubers! But stay away from the Metro trains).
When you arrive in LAX, it’s worth it to walk to LAXit which is where you need to take an Uber from as no curbside pickup unless Black. LAXit is a short walk from most terminals, especially Tom Bradley as well as the Delta terminal.
And youre also super close to the Westwood Village neighborhood and UCLA
