Hiring manager: I’ll weigh in as well -
Good - make it unique, make it stand out, DO NOT make it generic or a rehash of your resume. If your resume speaks for itself - then no need for a cover letter. If there’s anything in your resume that needs clarification - include that. I’m a VP of strategy that hires a lot from outside the industry - sometimes cover letters are needed to explain things. I don’t need to see one but if you send one, make it worth my time to read it.
Biggest mistake - adding nothing that isn’t in your resume.
Length - a few paragraphs. Short and sweet. I have a short attention span.
For creatives, cover letters are completely unnecessary. Your portfolio site should have an About You section that does the same job but in a much more interesting way. Only HR & recruiters see them. They go mostly ignored. CDs don’t see cover letters and the once or twice I have, it’s been evident the creative didn’t know the business and wouldn’t be a good fit. Make your About You section no longer than a paragraph or two, let it tell the user who you are as a creative and a person and do it in a way that’s authentic to you but creative as possible.
Are they needed?
That’s what I’ve been wondering. They seem pointless to me.
I like a cover letter to address an questions someone may have about Why? What are you leaving, why are you looking, why apply for the job you are applying for, if you live far from the job are you intending to move. Some that your resume does not already state?
Correction- why not what
