This is overkill/inefficient, but what works for me (I had trouble keeping up with deadlines as a junior and overcompensated 😅). All major deadlines are calendared, and our case management system sends out e-mail reminders with a 30-day and 1-week reminder. I have a running to-do list, which includes actual deadlines (i.e., deadline to file a motion) and internal deadlines (i.e., deadline to get the motion to a partner for review). I also have another separate list of all tasks I’ve done for a case in OneNote (I have a OneNote notebook for each case), including notes when I was assigned things, updated things, and sent things to partners (because sometimes they don’t respond, I forget to they don’t respond, and there goes the deadline… it’s also great for keeping track how many times you asked a partner to review things if they ask why you never followed-up…. ), as well as follow-up tasks for the original task (i.e., discovery that needs to be supplemented once we get discovery responses). At the end of the month, I usually run through the case file of each case to make sure I didn’t miss anything coming in/am aware of any upcoming tasks. I also usually look at my calendar 1-2 months in advance at the end of the month and add any upcoming deadlines to my to do list/task list to keep track.
I have one of those weekly appointment calendars. It’s saved my hide a few times. I have a 20 day deadline and a 30 day deadline. The case name, file number, attorney initials and what it is that is due. Servers went down for a week, and I was still able to track my deadlines. Had a colleague try to throw me under the bus. My calendar saved me.
Get a calendar. Seriously.
Thank you for this thread. I also like to have my case files organised chronologically in the database so that I can see at a glance what was the most recent communication/filing/order.
Honestly I love those desk calendars where each month is a big page and then each day is like a 2"x3" block. I write my big ticket items on there and then can always see my month at a glance. Yeah, I have everything in outlook and google calendars too but visually, it's so nice to just see everything that's most important at once. Maybe I'm just old school 🤣
