My firm took a different approach. They’ve reduced both associate base pay and hours thresholds down 25%, so associates who made $100k for 2000 hours now make $75k for 1500 hours. At the same time, they’ve modified the associate hours bonus so that if an associate remains busy and still works 2000 hours, that associate will make up the pay difference via quarterly bonuses. I think it’s a great system all around. Helps firm cash flow and the associates who are slow from being laid off, while not punishing associates who still have work to do. I kinda hope the firm just adopts the system permanently, so associates have more flexible with their hours and pay .

That’s a really decent approach. Keeps everyone honest and no bad surprises

I doubt many firms would tell associates the requirements are reduced. I’m thinking that on the back end folks won’t be penalized for not making the targets. firms have already decided this year’s bonuses won’t look like they usually do (if they will be given at all)
This is my thinking as well. Thanks for the input!
Demand the same hours, pay no bonus
Exactly—no way do they say no bonuses until December.
Amlaw 100 and no changes here.

What A1 and A2 said
My mid sized firm has reduced billable hour requirements for associates during this pandemic. This was done in two ways. First, we reduced required number of billable hours by 10%. Then, for the Summer, we are crediting 2 billable hours per Friday to each associate.

Got it, thank you!
V50 midlevel here. No changes to hours reqs and we are busier now than before COVID. Just did my 6th straight month of 250. Bet we get stuffed on bonuses

We’re super busy too. Will be very upsetting if/when no bonuses are given
