Chief
At my 5th interview with a firm, the person didn’t show up. They are the chair of the top chambers-ranked practice group in my field. They are busy and something came up. I didn’t view it as a red flag, took the job, and no regrets so far.
Before anyone asks, the reason why I prefer 1st place is combination of more desired practice area, established name brand, support system and large(r) teams, likely higher pay and better benefits. Second choice is smaller, has less resources, involves a less desirable practice area (for me personally), and has lower pay and benefits.
I had previously told my top choice that they were my top choice and asked them to speed things along due to my (then-pending) offer, and while I do think they made some effort, this is also not the first time an interview has been delayed. However, it is a larger firm and there are more people’s schedules to coordinate, so maybe it’s not entirely fair to ding them based on that? But all things said, I do think canceling with one minute’s notice was rather inconsiderate of my time.
Thanks! The interview was rescheduled for next week so I’m hoping they will have the courtesy to own up and apologize then. For now, I am trying to give them the benefit of doubt (maybe it really was a last-minute emergency). It’s just too early to tell whether this is a one- (or two-) time thing or a pattern.
That's good, well at least you're still a strong contender with solid in the running status. I was worried that not only would they give you but a minute's notice before the cancel and then just ghost you. TG doesn't at all sound like that's the case. I think you're doing the right thing, benefit of the doubt is a good strategy for now, since you don't know the reason why they did what they did. I just hope they don't waste your time or cancel next week's interview. Great, that gives you more time to really beef up and prepare for the interview. The odds are in your favor and they didn't just toss you off altogether. Best of luck to you!
At least they canceled first...
Are you a law student or new lawyer? Things get crazy busy and emergencies happen. You’ll be in their shoes soon enough.
