I’m not at EY but at 5 months we don’t charge training codes for client work. In fact, we only charge training codes for like the first week. Sounds like you’re getting wrong information if you’re doing client work.
At EY that should never happen. Partner is trying to pad his margin. He could be fired if anyone found out he was asking you to do this. Should charge code for work done - fully stop! Note - it may not be the partner who is asking you to charge training code but instead the manager - you should definitely ask partner about it. Most partners I know (I am one) would want you to charge all your time.
This… all of this. EY1 is dead on accurate. Mercury needs to reflect the hours that you worked and which codes the work goes to. If you find that what you’re putting into Mercury doesn’t reflect reality, you could get yourself in trouble. If you’re being told to do this by someone, and if you don’t feel like you can safely escalate it, then submit an anonymous tip - there is an anonymous hotline for this available on the intranet, and name names. I’m not on my laptop at the moment, but I think it’s Ethics Point.
If you don’t, you can bet that the next staff/senior working with this manager/ppmdd is going to have the same problem. But talk it through first (if you can). There may just be a miscommunication.
I’d recommend checking with whoever you’re reporting to on where you should charge your time now. It’s not unheard of for new hires to hit training for a little bit but I’d expect all go forward time to be chargeable. This could be an honest mistake on behalf of your supervisor who told you to hit the training code but you’re budgeted after a week or two
I think you need to talk to someone. Super low utilization raises flags with HR and eventually gets your fired regardless of great performance reviews. That person won’t be there to save you from HR.
Obviously, you just started. But, should break this habit ASAP. Also, I have see a Partner convince people to eat significant time to then later push for them to be fired for low utilization. Not all people are nice. You need to think about yourself.
To be clear, for when the manager pushes back and tells you the budget only supports a certain number of hours a day - there is a difference between what you put on your timesheet and what we bill to the client. The leadership of the engagement will take a hit on margin if you are charging hours they can’t bill to the client, but it is your OBLIGATION to record all hours you work. If they don’t want you to work as many hours, they need to tell you how many hours you can work and you need to stop doing client work when you hit that threshold.
Short answer, you don’t bill it.
