How common is it for first year associates to spin wheels? In my 4th month, I spent 6 hours doing a return with 3 K-1 royalties, 2 Schedule C with few expenses, and the usual 1099-DIV/INT, including consolidated 1099. Budgeted time was 5 hours total. I have yet to get my return reviewed.

Y’all could’ve just answered the associate’s question.

OP, all new hires spin their wheels. Learn as you go, communicate upwards and often, and don’t repeat mistakes. And as TS1 said, as soon as you know you’re reaching the budgeted time, let your reviewer know. Last, ask questions so you reduce time spent on spinning your wheels.

If my associates aren’t reaching budgeted time, I know I’m getting a half assed draft.

You will learn the amount of time it takes as you become more familiar with what you’re doing. A lot of people go from doing really well in school to not knowing what they’re doing and it makes them feel uneasy. Truth is that no staff knows what to do exactly. You learn from communicating upwards and not being afraid to say you don’t know what you’re doing and asking what steps to take next. Communicate upwards constantly and for example if you’re halfway to your budgeted hours and don’t think you will be able to finish in time, then let the person above you know. You’re not going to blow a budget at a lower position and most people would rather have you spend the extra time learning how to do something correctly. Moral of the story, don’t be afraid to ask questions and communicate constantly, especially if you feel like you’re just spinning your wheels

5 hours prep on a 6 hour budget doesn’t seem horrible. I would just communicate going forward as soon as you think you’re going to exceed the allotted time. It depends on your firm/ team but in my experience this is very common.

Don’t spin wheels! Ask questions!

This is the #1 thing hurting the new hires who believe they work more efficiently from home.

like

The same could be said of managers and seniors - anticipate the questions and address them before they even become an issue. New hires often don’t know what they don’t know.

Review note - change your ID to your company or title. pls fix

It's not my real name.

Yeah. Safer to not use real name

But it's not my real name.

Every new associate does this.

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? I've worked for the past 3 years in a practice that is heavily consulting based (inbound and outbound structuring) and I feel like I'm only just starting to understand the foundational concepts (where I can explain them clearly to clients) and offering a shred of value. Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming
