Were you exercising during pregnancy? If yes, i would start there and build back up slowly
If not, then walks, light weights, and gentle stretches first
C-sections are a hard recovery for sure
I began with some barre classes at 8 weeks and it was humbling - at 11 weeks I started some indoor cycling and at 14 weeks I have just started some lifting
I am using a trainer to lift btw - C-section requires extra help to bring the abs back together
Rising Star
I started using the Sculpt Society’s online classes, which have a postpartum program designed to rebuild your core, at 6 weeks PP, and like it a lot so far.
Walking! Both times PP id put my baby in the stroller and go for walks during their naps. Helped them sleep and helped me get steps in. Sometimes more than once a day too.
If you had a C-section look into deep core breathing to start out with. Remember that even if you're healed on the outside the scar on the inside does take a lot more time to heal. Trust your gut and listen to your body. But reconnecting with the deep core muscles is key. I'm 18mo pp from a C-section and am still doing the deep core breathing as a cool down method or just a quick 10-15 minute thing each day. I didn't think it was that important but by 9mo pp my lower back was killing me and a friend with experience told me to start the deep core work. Sounds dumb because it's "just breathing" but I swear it works and in a week I was feeling SO much better.
Also easy walks with the stroller getting longer and longer each day was about all I could handle for a long while. Especially in the first few sleepless NB months. Give yourself grace, you just built a human AND had major surgery. There's a reason ACOG recommends 18 months between pregnancies, especially after a C-section, takes time to heal and recover.
I found “BYOBaby” barre and yoga classes and went when it worked out with naps. I took walks daily. I aimed to stretch more before bed but wasn’t good about it.
I didn’t start truly exercising again until babe slept full nights and woke after a reasonable time for me to work out (she’s an earlier bird than me!) and, for a time, Dad and I alternated on morning care so I could go to more intense fitness classes.
Go at your own pace. Keep good nutrition (some insurance policies cover dietitians for postpartum) and be active enough for you to stay sane but now is not the time to add pressure.
Speaking as a marathoner, it was hard for me to not set big goals to be fit again. The advice i got “focus on self care without pressure” because I no longer control my schedule anymore and need to adapt to this new mom world.
I’ll add - I got pregnant with my second faster than expected, while I was still breastfeeding, and I’m planning on trying for a third so getting my body back in top shape isn’t a priority to me when my abs will just be stretched again. Right now, I’m in great baby baking and feeding shape and that’s enough for now.
