Agree with PM1! After some time I realized that my certain traits can’t be completely changed, or require too much effort to mask/sustain, and it is what it is. While you can work on some things and improve, some things are not really worth it, tbh. For example, I hate small talk in the begging of a Zoom meeting, I make effort, especially if it’s only a few people, but also I know I’m not going to be super chatty.
Also hyper self-conscious but somehow never got this in my performance/feedback.
Hmmm... you say that you feel like you're missing the mark but do you have any proof of that?? I find that people with some awkward social skills are normally more self-conscious than anyone else really notices. If nobody is talking to you about your performance in that regard, I wouldn't stress it! You'll just make yourself more uncomfortable if you over think it!

I don’t have any advice to offer. But just want to say I feel you. You’re not alone! If you ever figure it out, let me know :)
Read the room. That is a very underrated skill that will start to unravel some of this for you.
i feel like it also largely depends on the office culture - some places are just so alienating and make you feel like you shouldn't be speaking at all. i tend to focus on becoming really good at what i do, and people would naturally come to me for my opinions because i *know* the shit. keep your head up! :)
and unfortunately causing a bit of bad internalizing about expectations that I should be better and am failing. Any advice on how to handle that?
Why do you feel like you’re missing the mark? Growth happens when we feel most uncomfortable so try to think about it that way.
Could you ask your peers for feedback after these instances? Let them know what you’re looking to grow and are looking for constructive feedback.

Agree with the above. You’re probably overthinking it but it’s also hard to advise on this given how many things “missing the mark” could mean
You may be overthinking it but you probably know there is something missing and you want to improve. Soft skills are key to success so invest in learning how to use them. There are plenty of free ways to do this. But you can also find a coach or mentor to help, someone who has mastered the ability to be what you want to be. Don’t ignore your feelings. You obviously want to succeed and have the humility to improve yourself. JPL offers a free career critique if you want some one on one time with a mentor.
I do think our job is all about human-ing. Navigating hard conversations, weeding through confusion and tension to find the way forward.
I appreciate you’re aware and I think leaning in to be curious and a positive team member will go a long way.
Review all materials before every meeting. Even if that’s re-reading your own brief. Also: Cultivate opinions well before the meetings about what kind of work you like or don’t like. You can show up prepared to say a wide range of things, and then based on what you see, shared a prepared opinion that’s relevant to the work you review.
