I did this. Five years on the account side now nearly two as a PM.
I just applied for PM roles. If you’re looking to PM at an agency, you likely won’t need a PMP. Down the road, maybe that’s the move but at my agency any special certs don’t apply to the day to day role.
I’m sure you work with plenty of PM’s now. I’d start looking at their day to day so you can have a better understanding for when you start getting interviews. It’s a pretty easy transition though imo.
Good luck! I’ve really liked not having to talk to a client ever since I made the switch 😅
Work on your PMP, and in the meantime, start networking. It's typically much easier to pivot to PM internally than trying to get your foot in the door at a new company.
PMP is nice but expensive and time consuming. You can successfully transition without it. There are transferable skills between account and project mgmt. Adapt your resume to feature your PM experience, apply to PM jobs, talk to PMs and ask for advice or referrals. Keep getting PM experience and free online education in the meantime.
PMP certification is overrated. If you're coming from the AM side, jumping right in as a Jr. PM would be a good transition. With a little more experience in both camps, I'd highly recommend Engagement Management roles (AM and PM combined). It's really the best of both worlds.
Do you think getting a PRINCE2 Certificate can help me currently working as an Account Manager and have time to do some courses before I apply for the Jr.Project Manager role? Also, would you recommend an engagement management role for some one beginning or after gaining project manager experience?
Get a PMP. I hear it really helps.
A lot of it is transferring your current skills to a PM job, or matching the skillsets too. Maybe a PMP cert but a lot of agencies will help you get one
Consider getting certified in project management. The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers a certification program, including the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, which is recognized globally.
