Need a little more clarification on what exactly you're asking, but in general the firm cannot terminate you without cause for a year after you come back from a long tour. However, if they can prove that the layoff would have occurred despite your military service, they may have a defense for doing so. For example, if your entire department was let go, you may not be entitled to re-employment.
OP, yes you can get laid off while you're on orders. The company has the burden of proving that they would have taken the action irrespective of your service.
P1, this is very much an answer. These issues are not black and white, but rather depend on the facts of the case. If OP wants to divulge further information, we can probably get to a better answer and course of action. At least I'm trying to help.
The way I understand it, they can't actually terminate you until you return.. being on orders provides some protections but doesn't make you invincible.
