The longer you stay, the less numbers and “plugging” you do
Yeah I came here to say as much. It gets more interesting the longer you stay in, but I can understand someone just being totally bored by the whole thing. if you are, this might not be the right industry for you OP. Just remember though that every job is boring, and most people don't work a passion job. You gotta pay the bills, and accounting is a pretty good way to do so
Public accounting is nothing like plugging numbers
SS&C by a llloonggggggg shot…idk what this is lol. There’s no order or professionalism, no culture, very limited resources, no mentors, etc etc.
It pays my bills and it takes care of my family.
Not really, there’s people without family and barely have any bills to pay because they still live with their parents
For some people, the numbers are fascinating. Or, if not quite at the level of fascinating, not at the point of being deadening. But if you want to look into other fields, just do some brainstorming about what transferable skills you have. And go forth and find positions where they'll be an asset.
Yeah that’s the good for the weekend. Only if the job market this bad
Get your MBA
I’ve seen people with super generic work experience get in. It’s not out of the question if u get a high GMAT score and can put together a compelling narrative
First, people stay because it’s a job that pays well with reasonable stress. Second, the more you learn and progress the less it’s plugging numbers and the more you can contribute. When you (royal you, not you you) first come out of school, you are worthless. Have no ability to think or see issues or be value add. That comes way later.
I use my accounting degree to do more interesting work. The degree is useful to me because it gives me the understanding I need or the processes. I work closely with our accountants and I would never want their jobs. Except for the creative opportunities to improve processes, it’s mostly very structured and unyielding.
I like knowing how to translate operations into numbers and building processes. Audit sucks because it’s just ticking and tying. As you move up, you’re more involved with understanding how to record business transactions and setting up a process to do so.
Rising Star
Yeah at least finance is much more interesting but still doesn't feel like the end goal, at least for me.
The interesting work would keep my ADD at bay and I would actually enjoy the interesting work
Once you get enough technical acumen and practical application of the technical to client situations, you control your own destiny. You are only limited by your imagination. You can create solutions for your clients, provide wisdom, etc. can’t believe I get paid to do what I love. After a couple years in Deloitte Tax, I asked for a transfer to audit. Being shackled to my desk was killing me. Managing partner gave wise counsel… Stay the course. You like talking to clients and that is highly values in the profession. He was spot on!
Please ignore this person
Feeling disillusioned with accounting is more common than you might think. The monotony of repetitive tasks can make the profession feel less exciting, especially early in your career when the work may focus on basic bookkeeping or compliance tasks. However, there are ways to either reignite your interest in the field or leverage your skills to transition into something more fulfilling.
I agree that if you attend a top MBA program you should be able to do something different if you don't want to remain in accounting.
Many people don't work in accounting for their entire career. If you find it boring focusing on an MBA degree from a top graduate school is a good goal.
You are still very young if you have only been in the work force for 3 years.
