Not to be rude but I wouldn’t loop in my para in any of the above you cited to.
My sr lawyer likes a phone call or meet in person instead of email. He does cc the heck out of emails though. But, he gets so many emails he can't read them all and does not want to read mine. He told me so. But he was just being matter of fact. A phone call is done and achieves more in a couple of minutes than an email. I see this wisdom. You have to crack your partner's code with how they like to work and do that. Another sr partner was impossible to get work looked that the assistant had done. The assistant left the firm. I walked into the partner's office at 5pm which he was thrilled with, so it seemed, and answered my questions, looked at my work. That partner did not want a call, was too busy during the day but happy with a few minutes at end of day. Just some examples. Hope it helps.
I agree with “cracking the partners code.”
If the partner has a EA or legal admin they might be your best avenue to understand how to connect with the partner, but don’t make it seem like you’re going behind the partners back.
This is frustrating, but common. Sometimes partners genuinely forget unless reminded in the moment—try framing it as a way to keep things efficient or avoid duplicative work.
I’m a midlevel associate and I could have written this. So unfortunately I have no advice but deeply empathize
If there is a junior or mid-level associate on those matters, talk to them. The partner may not want to add more firm emails to the distribution and/or it may be standard practice to not loop in paralegals. Being left out of strategy conversations could be for many reasons but again, the associates should be the ones giving you updates.
Does your firm use iManage/NetDocs/another similar system? I know it’s an annoying answer but when things are missing that’s always a huge help. You could try insisting they at least file their documents within doc management (or, better, that they cc you so YOU can file them—and then you’re on the emails AND have an extra layer of protection while they think “sweet, I’m glad I remembered to do this so I don’t have to file it,” and you get the 0.1 billable charge for “review communications and store in document management system”
