How do you handle the anxiety of holding your ground on salary? I gave my number today, and the recruiter just stopped talking, let out a slow sigh, and started typing furiously on her keyboard before saying that's at the absolute top of their band. Now I’m overanalyzing the tone of her voice and wondering if I just priced myself completely out of a job I actually wanted.

Did they publish a salary range on the role? And/or did you ask them how much was budgeted for the role?

Being “at the top of the range” is better than being told they can’t meet your expectations.

like

It's a negotiation. Better to be "at the top of the range" than to have put forth a number that was way out of range. Who knows why the recruiter acted the way they did, but don't let it rattle you. They are well within their rights to come back to you with an offer, at which point they may offer a lower number. That's the point to focus on, what you will say then, and how important that additional $ is, vs. it isnt important. Focus on what happens next and being prepared for it, not a recruiter who couldn't maintain their poker face and professionalism for whatever reason. Good luck to you!

like

Bah, it's a recruiter. They aren't here for you they are hired by the company to get the best AND cheapest applicant. The recruiter is probably up to her eyeballs in 'expensive' (in the eyes of her client) candidates.

like

In this job climate you need to be a little flexible. Taking a hard stance might have worked 5 years ago but now there are way too many candidates out there who will work for less.

like

I always try and give an open ended answer that refers to the posted range and my flexibility. It's a really weird feeling conversation when their range is already $100k below what I was making, but I need to put groceries on the table, but I put on my poker face. I haven't gotten an offer in 7 months, so the disparity is probably pretty obvious anyway.

Good news is Ive got the chops to get another good job, the ba news is I will be flat broke when the offer comes in.

Keep it friendly and collaborative. They’re trying to bring the best candidate to the employer.

You don't know what you don't know. If you did your research, you should be in the right ballpark. And if they did their research, they shouldn't be surprised. The real question is whether they'll act or move on.

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?
