I’ve found the right time is usually when you’re already doing parts of the next role without the title. Keep a record of your successes, and don’t wait to be noticed—ask for a meeting and clearly outline how you’ve added value. If you have a year-review approaching, speak to your head of department a few months before to see if there's anything to be working towards. Confidence goes a long way too!
Yes that’s a good idea to keep a record of successes and parts of the next role that I’ve completed, otherwise I would just forget and then in the meeting I won’t have anything to back me up to prove my worth!
Keep a journal of your work wins, it's like a little book of receipts that prove your worth. Display leadership qualities even if you're not in a leadership role (yet). But if you feel ready for growth, the time is now.
I always worry about taking a leadership role, I don’t want to order around my peers as we are equal.
One idea could be to move onto a different company, your skills might be more valued somewhere else!
Yes that’s true, I’m freelance so at least I move around companies regularly- so I can show new people my worth hopefully!
I would take a look at all your work/tasks and see if you're already doing anything that someone in that next-level would do. Document them with details and any wins. Creative work can feel intangible and this can make it tangible. With this in hand, you can PITCH a promotion with the impact you've made and value you can bring in a more senior role.
