When I was regularly employed my goal was to save 50k a year. Now it's just ... 😬 ... whatever possible. Like SVP I track all my expenses. Every purchase is on a rewards card that gets the balance paid automatically each month. That makes it easy to categorize and track in Quicken. I know exactly what I spend each month/year and helps me adjust when I need to.
I save about 15% of my paycheck each month. Most effective way was to write down all my monthly expenses so I could visually see what I was spending, calculate how much “spending” money I have for the month and keep track not to go over
Tracking expenses is key to see where you can cut costs. I use the app Spendee and I love it!
I track my spending with Mint. It has good budgeting functions and alerts.
