Combined incomes in household 165k. Mid-40s age, one kid. Did Dave Ramsey to pay off 43k in debt over 2.5 years. Now1900/month mortgage, one car pmt, no other debt. Scrimped for a while and now back to spending a bit more. Pay cash to save money. Had some big purchases last year (55k+ worth) paid up front. So savings is down to 70k for expenses and emergency fund. Always feel paycheck to paycheck but luckier than others to have savings.
No college fund: our extra goes towards high school and then retirement. Can borrow/grant for college, nothing like that for retirement.
Well thanks for making me feel like shit guys! I'm 29, make $110k, but live in LA. I basically have only a couple grand in savings and about $15k in credit card debt. No student loans. I am the sole breadwinner though, and am supporting my husband. This is the first year I'm able to pay down the credit cards. Before, 50% of my take home pay went only to rent. It was impossible to not live paycheck to paycheck until a few months ago.
Making around 70k. Graduated from college last year. Paying between 1500-1700 a month on loans (and those are the minimum payments). Have about 4K saved up. I'm 23. Been using buxfer and it's really helpful.
This is the most depressing thread. A lot of folks here would be in big trouble if something went down.
This is so based on geography that none of these comments are helpful. Also, a 25 year old making $48k with $17k in savings? How does that add up?
@AD1. Not sure if you are a dude, or if you are entertaining fluid gender dynamics, but tell your husband to get a job. You'd be shocked at the burden this lifted. Yes, @SVP, most people are poor, even those with pretty good jobs. Welcome to America!
25 years old. 105k (90k salary and the rest from freelance). Had 19k in student loans and paid off in full after a couple freelance gigs I did-- no credit card debt. 6k in savings and do 12% in 401k. Best way to save money is don't let your lifestyle creep up on you whenever you get pay raises. Best way to pay down debt is snowball (smallest first and then you have the confidence of accomplishing those small debts paid off to tackle the big ones).
Age 30, Salary 105k, debt= home loan of 120k (with 250ish equity), retirement 210k, savings 145k. I don't have expensive hobbies and live in a low cost of living area (Midwest). I just sock away a budgeted amount from each paycheck so saving is entirely on autopilot. Over the years as I've made more, my lifestyle stayed the same so it's just more money in the bank.
Digit is dope tho. I forgot I signed up and found a random G one day!
There are sooooo many of these on fishbowl already 🙄
Forgot to add - I have $17k saved up so far
I also use Digit to help with savings. Usually use the funds for unexpected expenses like car repairs, vet visits, etc.
Spend it. Also, don't be a dick.
@senior copywriter... how did you put away 26k per year since you were 22 for retirement? Is that all 401k or Roth ira as well?
Yes I max my 401k and Roth IRA contributions. Couldn't at the beginning but now I'm able to. Graduating during the recession so stocks were depressed, compound interest, and company matching all helped as well.
32. $130k income. $40k in 401K. $12K credit card debit from shitty medical and vet expenses. $1000 in etherum. No real savings as wife has been out of work for 2 years so supporting us both. Have chosen to spend extra money on travel vs savings. Semi balance between regret and not on spending toward travel.
25 years old | 48k salary
Debt - 28k (school loans only) monthly payment $170
Retirement - not saving specifically for it, but every paycheck i get around $1400, I pay $1100 for rent and utilities the rest goes into my savings, I don't use my debit card instead I have the freedom chase credit card that gives you 1.5% cash back on every purchase so every month I pay off my credit card since I use that instead. I keep about 1k in my checking at a time...
Freelance. Making 3500-4000 every two weeks after tax. Working until the work dries up. Save every cent that doesn't go to rent bills food and entertainment.
36, never had any debt (no college), almost 400k in cash, ~60k in Roth IRA, a few cars and other property. Still rent but don't like idea of bank owning me so I plan to buy a house or two in cash when the time is right, interest and mortgage is a scam in my eyes.
120k salary. 25k in bank. 27k in IRA. 85k student loans.
