In tax, Goldman Sachs keeps trying to get me to join their FP&A roles. I decline since it doesn’t seem interesting to me but if it is to you, please don’t feel like you have to fit a particular background
Sometimes you just gotta shoot your shot
I made this change. It took a decent pay cut - I was paid well for a remote tax roe and moved to an SFA at a manufacturing company, so I didn't have much choice.
I agree with D1. You have to keep searching and applying and find a story. A bunch of FP&A is telling stories. These numbers moved this way because of x, y, and z. So do that with your resume and interviews. Craft a narrative of how tax aids you in FP&A. It’s very doable but harder than audit.
I also agree with D1 that it's not interesting to me. My primary role is business partnering. So I have the leaders of the G&A function I support to understand why the numbers are moving the way they are, why or why not they're not tracking to the forecast, and I help with putting together their annual plan.
In reality, it's running reports in SAP and BPC, consolidating the figures, and putting a PowerPoint together. There are plenty of FP&A roles that are more strategy or modeling-focused, but this role is meh.
Really depends, some people went from tax - high senior to FPA analyst in tech - and Ive also
Known other ppl who went into Sr Analyst roles in FPA from tax.
