I guess it depends on who is asking. I don’t always take it as they are trying to be funny. Allot of black women switch up their hair, wigs or weaves and other races find it creative. Especially if it’s coworker’s who have worked with you for years. A client it might be different. I think the bigger thinking is the relationship with the person asking the question.
Under any context, it's real unless you have imaginary or invisible hair. You also paid for it so it's every bit as real as anyone else's.
If it's not a client, I say nothing and just look at them.
If it is, I look slightly annoyed, and say yes would you like my stylist's card?
It tends to get a laugh when the person is an older, white, male - and for some reason it's always an older white male....sigh.
Ugh!!!!
Rising Star
Just say yes, ask if theirs is, and keep it moving. That’s a sign of the person not having appropriate boundaries at work. It’s not appropriate to ask anyone if something on them is real.
Ask them, as opposed to fake?
Or is there any other kind?
Or is that something you really need an answer to?
Or do you ask all your coworkers this question or am I just special?
Yikes! Lol! While I love any single answer! Will she get labeled as unprofessional or angry?...
I would respond back with “why do you ask?”
Because assuming we are all black women. We are labeled aggressive, angry, and sarcastic for no good reason! I've been there many times!
Yes. Next.
"oh noooo it's a hologram! 😃"
I would simply say oooh that’s not an appropriate question and look cringy like you feel bad for them that they even asked. Like you pity their ignorance. We literally just had harassment training and asking someone about their hair is a covered offense.
best response.
Ugh, I hate this for us. These are the microaggressions that poke a person to death. No one would dare ask a woman in a professional setting if she has implants or a man if he's wearing a toupee. In this day and age, black women aren't the only ones wearing wigs and extensions, but I've not witnessed someone asking anyone but black women this question. You can answer politely and professionally or laugh it off and continue suppressing the feeling of being disrespected. Or you could be snide or even gently tell a person why this is an inappropriate question and be accused of being hostile. We just can't win.
That is exactly my point
It’s definitely an attack on someone’s dignity
And some of us play into it, as illustrated by some of the comments here
I ignore them, regardless who it is. My thought process is what is the relevancy and their intentions. It’s not anything positive in my opinion.
Oh and I go to salon every week I don’t do wigs, braids or extensions.
I ask if their question is real.
What’s the issue though! When anyone appreciates my hair I am quick to say it’s a wig! I don’t care 🤷🏽♀️
Right it’s not your hair & it’s not that serious. Offense just means an area one is not confident in. Doesn’t the media push black women are not confident with their hair? So other races are gonna ask. Do you like it? Thanks 😊
First of all, why do we continue going through this next level bullsh$t. Why does this continue being a thing?
I'm assuming this comment came from a white coworker?
The bigot governor in Texas Abbott just pasted the Crown Act." Why do we need an executive act to not be discriminated against?
I especially hate when a black woman asks me that question!
When will it stop. Prolly nevah!
This is a common question in public
Since I wear human hair wigs, yes it's real. And I have the receipt to prove it.
I started a new job last week and have had four different hairstyles. I’m waiting for someone to ask lol
I dont
