I feel the same way instinctively but when it’s my turn to be hiring manager it’s always helpful to see people apply their talent in ways more directly relevant to the role they’re interviewing for. Especially true bc you truly never know who worked on what in projects they present from their portfolio - they could just be excellent interviewees 🤷🏻♀️ I personally only think this is helpful for hands on roles. I imagine moving into roles above CD levels, it starts to really get insulting.
It’s the Julia Roberts’ in “Pretty Woman” No Kissing rule! 😆💄
Ive never been asked to do this, but in my fantasy, I very nicely, very innocently ask “oh interesting, Ive never been asked to do that. Would it be a day rate be for something like that, or one amount for the whole project? How do you guys do it typically?”
Like those are the only two options anyone can imagine in the world. Make them figure out how to tell you they expect work for free, and realize how bad it sounds. But then you have a reason to turn them down, like (again, very innocently) “oh, gosh, I dont think Id be able to do that then”
love this thank you
100% agree. Tests should be paid for. They can be useful though. I have read a few mock assignments from companies that made me realize I would not be happy doing the job. Saved me time in the long run!
PS OP I’m super curious to find out how they react to your letter. Thanks for taking one for the team!
So we all agree that we should be compensated for tests, but how many of us still do them without pay anyway?
Does anyone know if that film actually worked?
Got the same ask from Omelet for the AD role. Maybe if it was a cooler shop or something but they asked for a few pieces including one I would have to animate and it just didn’t seem worth it to me, especially since I wasn’t going to be compensated for my time.
They need to pay otherwise no.
I once got this, doubled my freelance rate and they accepted. I ended up not taking the job as I realised I could get more just freelancing for them... and subsequently realised they were a terrible agency. Win win.
