Not hard, if wasting dozens of hours doesn’t bother you
Do you view it as a waste because PM is unattractive to you? Or because you don’t think it’s necessary in the field?
Plenty of PM roles do require it, so not sure I’d agree it’s a waste if that’s your career path of interest.
Not hard
Your at McKinsey obviously nothing is hard for you, this question is for us common people.

Not hard, but other more valuable certificates are out there

I’ve seen companies value SAFE certificates and Agile. A lot more applicable as well.
I bought a self-study guide and took about a month to go through it before taking the test and passed it on the first try. A Boot Camp would make it faster but it’s not a necessary expense if you’re footing the bill
You know it's hard out here for a PMP (you ain't knowin')
When he tryin' to get this money for the agency (you ain't knowin')
For the Clients want more scope to be free (you ain't knowin')

Reporting back early, I’m on the 3rd boot camp day and have been zoning out all day because this stuff is a mix of:
A) Things I already know from doing the job
B) Common sense
I hope the test is a breeze.
It’s been a while (like more than a decade) since I studied for/took the exam, but I recall having the same thoughts. Simple concepts but you have to regurgitate the PMI jargon to pass the test

Sitting through a boot camp literally right now for the contact hours. Will report back once I take the test.
Pretty easy. Read the PMBOK twice and you're good to go.
Not hard/complex concepts but a lot of memorization and hrs to put in. Many answers I didnt agree with bc its all about what would happen in a perfect world, not rlly applicable real life day to day. So from that aspect, it was hard. Well, more like annoying
60-70% of the test now is from the Agile Study guide and another 10 is common sense. You can almost pass the test without even reading the PMBOK so I'd say it's gotten a lot easier.
