Boundries need to be set. They knew they needed to provide their information well before yesterday. Were you in discussion with them and knew it was coming? If they provide informaton at 5pm (or later!) on 4/15 they should not expect a tax return to be prepared same day. Even an extension takes time to do and if it was complicated may not be able to be computed accurately aside from paying in the same amount of tax as prior year (maybe + 10%) which may or may not give them a valid extension depending where they live. This is all I would ever say could be done at that point. Next year they need to be given a deadline as to when they need to provide information if they expect the return completed vs. a deadline to provide information to file an extension - and if they miss the deadline you may not be able to complete timely. If everyone waited until 4/15 you would never be able to accomodate everyone. That said, I'm often working late on 4/15 to attempt to accomodate those I can, and have definitely been up against the 11:59pm wire before.
All good firms give April 16th off to everyone.
I agree, however, I don't work for a decent firm.
We were done around 7 PM last night. We file extensions for anyone who hasn’t returned their emails by noon. I was stuck later mostly reconciling that nothing slipped through the cracks. if clients haven’t given you enough to calculate their extension, make an educated guess, add in Q1, maybe even Q2 if it’s a wild guess and round up. Call it a day. Be sure you have language in your engagement letters about information needing to be submitted X days before the deadline otherwise you’re going on extension.
I am not involved with taxes, and I left around 4:30-4:45pm. I also try to start my workday around 7am.
I worked until 2:30 am but that’s because I work for sloppy Company called turbo tax. In the last place I worked we left at 5 pm no matter what . And we would never accept anyone’s documents if they came in on April 15th . Someone commented below about boundaries and I think he said it best ! Plus they need to respect your time and knowledge n expertise. Good luck to you next year ;)
