I took a 4 day boot camp to meet the education requirements. I then signed up for the exam 2 weeks out and studied 2 hours/day until then. Pretty easy process. However, if your company’s unwilling to reimburse for the training and exam, udemy has cheap courses to take that meets the requirements as well. The exam itself is pretty easy if you have common sense
I also did a 3 or 4 day boot camp (think it was the PMI endorsed one). I probably crammed for about a week and half and passed with an above score in all areas. Agree it was mostly common sense but there are some concepts you need to memorize and regurgitate bc the answers are based on the materials and not on intuition. That said, people do fail so I'd suggest you give yourself more than 1.5 weeks to study!
To your question on when to book, I'd suggest booking to give yourself a deadline to work towards.
