I’m in the same exact boat. Been in my position for a few years now and just coasting. Don’t get me wrong, I love the work-life balance that I have now but I’m not being challenged at all. I want to take on new roles specifically in tech but also don’t want to take a gamble on a terrible boss or work environment.
I was like that, took a slow approach to finding being very picky on the a startup job that was more fast pace. It’s a good place to be at when you are at a job you don’t mind and just looking for something better. Overall the new job hit the mark on what I was after but 2 years into COVID, I’m now super burnt out working so much.
So two main points, one is you may be surprised at how long to find the next role if you were very picky / grass is always feels greener but isn’t always and two, this feeling of coasting might be what you want after a while.
Finally a direct number, 2 years if you are early, 3-5 years if mid career is probably best in terms of optics but isn’t a rule.
Doing very well so financially and career wise was good but prob will take it easier the next few years even if I get promoted later from now on. I really like my team so not planning to leave.
First step is to find out what you want in terms of culture and size. Then network to validate that’s true cause everyone markets themselves as a great place to work. I also took a lot of initial interviews to get a feel but didn’t move forward if I thought it wasn’t a fit which is a privilege when you have an existing job.
My philosophy is that unless you’re in a position that is completely untenable (e.g., illegal activities, toxic environment, Co-worker, boss), ask for what you want. If they can’t give it to you, then find someplace that can and then leave. That way no one is surprised when you leave as you have been very professional about it, and the length of your tenure is irrelevant.
