Ugh first year here… I went over 200 over and will I guess wait to see what I get bonus wise.
I think associates generally hit the minimum, but my group has been pretty busy this year and I’m the newest one (there’s only 5 of us)…

Sometimes, when I’m feeling generous, I like to throw the partners a bone and bill an extra hour.
Literally zero. Unless there’s additional bonus $ on the table for high billers, why would you want to bill extra?

Save the push for the years closer to partner.
I aim for at least 20 over in case there is a glitch or something, if I’m going for hours. I don’t really pay attention to hours until the last quarter of the year. If I’m not close to being on track, I target between 80-90%. It’s just not worth the extra hustle if I have to work that much more in the last quarter. I still do the work that comes in; I just don’t chase hours.
But the billable target at my firm is for bonus, not good standing.

Why would I aim above that

Dla gives additional bonuses for every 100 hours over so aiming for 2100 this year.
It’s a lot. Counsel negotiable but definitely material and worth it to me and my family (I’m primary income earner, 2 kids).
If I bill 250 over target I get a 30k bonus. That’s worth it to me.
Maybe if you just started your career and don’t have kids or hobbies. That’s only $120/hr, and the impact on your lifestyle worsens out of proportion to increased income as you exceed normal billing targets (which are already 125-150% of a healthy workload).
300…. Guess I’m weird
Over a month of free work 😬

I have a pro rated target because I’m a lateral so I’m aiming for 10-20 hours above that as a buffer just in case something gets messed up I’m the calcs
Same here.

So no law firm gives discretionary bonus plus if you are exceeding the target?
Mentor
Lots of firms provide above market bonuses that are advertised and aren’t worth chasing, but that’s not their purpose. Their purpose is to provide some incremental compensation to the hard workers who did it anyway.
Then, lots of firms also have off the record — super secret - compensation that is very meaningful and goes to those with both high hours and high performance. This happens more often in “super boom” environments where retention is an issue. Think last year (and not this year).
