Man last year I had 40-ish bench trials, this year only 4 so far. But I’m in insurance defense and a lot of stuff has been settling. I LOVE going to trial. Love it.
I really recommend going to court and watching trials. You can see how great litigators do it…or if it’s not a great attorney, watch and notice missed objections and think about better arguments you’d make!
About once a year but I personally only handle matters that last a week or more so I can’t speak to other practices that may have several half/one day trials a year. I live for it but echo the above comment about it taking a heavy toll on you. I remember after a 3 week trial that I worked 50-60 days straight on, I slept for 16 hours straight without interruption the night of closing arguments.
Not once in 10 years. I do wage and hour class actions. Have gotten to the week before trial but never all the way.
On average once a year. I live for it. But it does wear me out and I have a readjustment period afterwards.
I’ve tried 7 this year thus far and expect to hit 8 or 9 by years’ end. I love the rush!
Once a year on average. Love every second of the trial itself. The prep is brutal though.
Handling my second trial this year. Leftover case from a prior attorney and I’ve tried VERY hard to discuss reasonable settlement but each call I get a literal “F you” from the attorney on the other side by just asking for a bottom line.
Truly makes me question the “professionalism” in our field
1 per year.
Love it, but as others have said, takes a toll on you. It also takes a toll on your spouse if you have kids.
My wife also has a demanding (non-lawyer) job and it is a nightmare for her when I am in trial and she has to juggle the kids by herself.
About once a year. It is very demanding so I don’t see how I could do more than a couple per year
I’ve done like 10 but none since the pandemic! So worried I’ve lost my skills!
A handful of jury trials a year. I get nervous bowels right before. One time defense counsel says “this may be TMI but I’ve been practicing for 30 years and I still have bathroom issues before a jury trial.” It never goes away, but it’s always fun once you actually get in it!
