How productive do you feel like your stand up meetings are? I’m sitting in a 30-45 minute stand up every morning that doesn’t feel like it’s doing much but allowing me to share what my plan is for the day. Is it crazy to suggest to my manager keeping our stand up to 15-20 minutes? I know other teams that do this and it works really well for them.

Ours are generally 15-20 minutes tops. It seems like plenty to me, and we have a very large, geographically distributed team.

Max should be 15 minutes for the standard stand-up. If people have parking lot items, it might extend to 20 or 30 minutes.

Maybe 25 minutes on a long morning. Otherwise 10-15 minutes. But I'm currently on a pretty small team, it was definitely longer when I worked at a bigger company. How big is your job?

Ours are max 15 mins usually 10.

A 15-20 min stand up is the perfect time for this. 30 minutes takes away from the purpose of standups and usually means someone is speaking for too long or theres too much crossover of department/functions

If these are daily meetings just recapping your plans for the day, I absolutely think it should be capped at 15 minutes. That is more than enough time. You can suggest that it will help with productivity

I don't think that's crazy at all. 45 minutes just to discuss an agenda seems pretty crazy to me

That does sound long. I feel that when it gets that long the discussion has to be taken offline (meaning outside of the daily meeting) with the limited audience. Sometimes it takes someone to take a lead to say that.

I think it's pretty reasonable to request only 15-20 minutes tops for a stand-up meetings. That's more than ample time to go over everything.

Yes your stand up should not be longer than 15 minutes so you can definitely ask for improvement.
However, your scrum master or the team should manage it. It is a bit surprising that your manager runs it. That might be one of the reason why it’s not effective.

Another tip is to split your standup in 2 parts:
1. Standup where everyone gives a brief update: what they did yesterday, what they plan to do today and if there is any blocker
2. Meet after to discuss anything in more details. For example if there is a blocker on a certain issue, take a note of it and keep it for this part. If someone takes too much time to explain some problem, you can tell them that you took the point that there is an issue and will plan time separately to discuss the details and solution. I

It is important to politely stop someone if they talk too much and ask them to summarize, or bring people back on track if they go off topic.
You can also take notes during meeting of things that makes the session so long. Maybe there is a process issue in the company, a training issue where people don’t understand what is scrum and what the stand up is for. Maybe the retro is skipped and some issues should be discussed in retro instead of stand up. Maybe planning wasn’t efficient? This way you can come up with an action plan with your manager.

Hi all. I’m a new hire as an associate tech consultant, been here for ~2 weeks.

This week, I’ll be meeting my senior manager (who is also my counsellor) in a 1:1 virtual session. Any tips on specific questions I should ask? I’m meeting him for the first time and thought I might want to learn a lot from him!

Thanks :D

Hello, I have a question that needs your inputs how to handle. I am working with a post-MBA Associate on a project and this person seems to do extra work beyond what the team is asking the rest of us to do. I think during our conversations with the leadership, there were a couple of points that were brought up by the MD but that was not a concrete directive that we need to do because if it is, I would know about it from the chain email since I am staffed to the project.

Has anyone had a Manager that does not work well with your ADHD? Im going through this right now and the way they communicate doesn’t match what I need. If I ask questions, they huff and puff. It’s sucks that I don’t have enough interest to continuously focus on the projects, but now I have even less motivation because I dread dealing with my manager.

I'm in the middle of a background check with Deloitte for a Project Delivery role. In the background check application I listed my previous employers - Cognizant/Teksystems etc but my resume only had the client names I worked at . Does this pose a problem if Deloitte HR compares my resume to the background check form ? Also my title within cognizant might have been an associate but my resume mentions the designation for the client. Is this a reason for concern? Will they ask me to justify it ?
