Here’s a hack specifically for this situation:
- Hire a mentor in your specialty/job title, not just ask them to help you out, but literally buy their expertise. Maybe someone you trust you’ve worked in the past or just reach out through connections or LinkedIn. Buying people’s expertise is so underrated. And yes not everyone will be up for it or it’ll expensive, but worth it.
- Hire a coach to work on your confidence and being able to let go asap.

I’m going to be super honest… if you are actually doing badly and it’s not just your own self-perception, I would be genuinely surprised if anyone actually cares enough to do anything about it. I feel like no one ever really knows what’s actually going on, ever. Issues that are brought up are never actually escalated, if they’re minor. You’ll probably be fine. Have a backup plan, but do the best you can and use this all as a learning experience imo.
I've noticed many people make some pretty big money losing mistakes and not fired. No body cares enough about anything to make a big deal about anything to make changes.
Based on the number of people I’ve met at publicis who are terrible at their jobs - not very quickly
Sad but true
But what percentage of this do you think is real versus manifested in your mind?
How new are you at the job? Talk to someone, maybe someone you can trust and let them know you are overwhelmed. HR is more considerate now than they used to be. It’s important to let them know though. I speak out of experience
Does HR know they are not the vibe
Are you on CoLab? Everyone is over titled. Fake it til you make it.
For real though. if you were on my team and talked to me honestly about how you’re feeling but were wanting to get there, I’d be with you every step.
It’s hard to fire people. Someone who wants it and is coachable.. I’ll take it.
Have you been told you’re under performing?
Find a mentor. Make friends with someone you respect. Watch others and learn. I had a mentor when I started out. But that was back when advertising was FUN. It’s harder now bc it seems like everyone is just out for themselves to keep a job, especially those who work under holding co’s. Keep moving forward. And people who lose their jobs are older and make too much $$$. Not the younger ones.
If you’re a relatively cheap salary, you may find you get a lot of runway. As long as you don’t like set anything on fire or anything.
A long while, especially if you’re likable. When people start complaining about you is when things get escalated.
God, yes—be likable. I assume that’d make it harder for someone to fire you, but it also will help you land your next gig. I’ve been rehired by people later on (after normal cuts) because we just enjoy working together.
Nobody mentioned this - but are you under 90 days? If you are under 90 days and it’s highly obvious it is easier in that window for them to let you go. This biz is all about fake it it till you make it. I joined a tech team once at mid level account and had zero actual experience. I worked my butt off, learned fast and now have been in MarTech for 10 years loving it.
I did that once. Took 8 months for them to cut me loose and when they did I was beyond relieved.
Pro
Just keep faking it till you make it. You'll get there.
What is your role / position?
Keep in mind, there's no such thing as the perfect employee, so don't be so hard on yourself.
What stage of your career are you at there? If it's prohibitionary, I'd suggest checking in with your report for initial feedback. Or set up bi-weekly check-ins with your manager for project statuses and support, etc.
Otherwise, keep your chin up!

Fake it till you make it!
How did you land your job to begin with?
So many people are looking right now. Some hitting 8 months to a year of searching. Every job post is inundated by applicants.
It seems as though agencies are collecting a slew of backup plan potential hires.
If you are surviving, not fired yet, you’re probably doing better than you think.
Because it’s way too easy to let people go and fill their role with a trove of replacements they are keeping on file.
