I have 3yrs experience in house and have been looking for my second in-house gig for 2 of them with no luck. Can’t really say but it’s gonna be subjective. Some people find something in as little as 6 months, some take years. I got my first/current one after 2.5yrs of being a litigator. I started applying as soon as I got barred and never stopped.
All depends on department. Corporate will be 10x easier than Lit.
Less common than tech transactions but still way more common than lit, also generally pays well for chill WLB. I usually see a handful of active posts. I would say odds are good if you’re qualified and grind that you’ll find something.
Tough. I wouldn’t count on it. If you’re not picky it will be much easier. The issue is that you need to get lucky in terms of timing for when they are hiring. They can also take a really long time to interview/hire.
If you need to get a job in three months you need to basically take whatever you can get in terms of salary, industry, etc.
I was a 5th yr in 2021 when I started looking and landed an offer within 5 months of starting to look...I think my initial interview to offer took like 2-3 months. I think that quick timing was pretty fortunate and not the norm, and probably won't be common in this job market. I will note that it was 2021 and the job market was insanely favorable to employees back then as well
2021 pre-SaaS bubble popping was peak time to transfer in-house. I benefited from it too.
Rising Star
Right now i don’t think it’s super likely. I am already in-house and it took me almost 6 months to find a new role.
I think it’s possible to pull off. I was a 5th year associate (specialist), applied aggressively 20-30 postings in Oct. Had 5 interview invites, and all lead to job offers in Nov/Dec. Some in house teams find big law specialists to be very competitive and will at least want to talk to you.
I did within a month with 4 YOE so it’s possible! Not sure how typical it is.
Always wanted to go in-house but didn’t start looking/interviewing till early 3rd year (BigLaw M&A) - got an offer in Dec of that year and put in my two weeks Jan of my 4th year. I think it depends what you’re looking for — if you don’t care about salary dip, culture, etc I think it could be fairly quick otherwise expect a minimum of a year to get an offer
I never really loved M&A but soaked up all the transferable skills that come with doing it for four years (highly organized, being a switchboard, how to be a team player, communications skills, etc) that I assumed would be commonplace in any professional corporate environment (spoiler: it’s not lmao) so it never really felt like I’m “abandoning” it when I never really wanted to stick with it long term in the first place
Referrals go a long way. Try to network with in house attorneys you know, e.g., colleagues from your firm who went in house
Maybe not particularly realistic, but you never know what can happen. I am 9 YOE in a specialist area and got my first in house job through a referral from a former colleague. From first informal chat to receiving formal offer took just under a month. The job also pays very well for in house so it was a good opportunity . They were having trouble finding someone with the desired level of experience and seniority.
I was able to go in-house at the beginning of my 4th year and within just a couple months of looking. This was a long time ago and I also had laid the groundwork by talking to a lot of recruiters earlier in the process
